Visitor Info
“Ithaca is Gorges” is a slogan and bumper sticker you will see often in Ithaca and nearby areas of the Finger Lakes region of central New York. The glaciers have formed an extremely scenic area of gently rolling hills punctuated by gorges and sparkling slender blue lakes. There are many wineries on the shores of Cayuga, Seneca and Keuka lakes. This area is noted for exceptionally good white wines, and several wineries boast excellence awards for some of their products.
There are three State Parks located in the Ithaca vicinity—Robert H. Treman, Buttermilk Falls and Taughannock Falls, which is in Trumansburg, NY. There is picnicking, camping, boating, hiking, and swimming at these parks. Other local parks offer boating and picnicking.
Fertile growing conditions produce an abundance of farm-fresh produce, U-pick berry and fruit orchards, and organic markets. The Farmers Market opens on the waterfront at Steamboat Landing every weekend from April to December, and from mid-May through October at a downtown location.
Sports lovers can enjoy the fall weather at football games at Ithaca College and Cornell University. There are opportunities for water sports on Cayuga Lake. Many cross-country ski trails can be found in nearby areas, and downhill skiing is a short drive away at Greek Peak.
