1. Get Forms For Keys
Before you can get keys to the lab, have to get a form from Tracy Davenport in PSB G-72. The form will detail the required safety trainings you'll need before you can get keys. The keys you'll want will be for room B-45A (all McEuen offices and labs) and B0081 (the service chases). You can also get one for the stockroom.
2. Lab Safety Tour
You are not allowed to get keys to the lab until you have taken the lab safety tour. This tour just goes through a checklist of how to get information about chemicals used in the lab, what to do in the case of a spill, and how to dispose of chemicals safely. Any senior group member can give this tour, but it is nominally the responsibility of the group safety representative. The current group safety rep is Jonathan Alden. Make sure to fill out and sign the safety tour form while doing the tour.
3. Get Lab Keys
Once you have done the safety tour, you can get signed off to get the keys for the lab. Take the key form to Paul McEuen and have him sign it, and return it to Tracy.
4. Get computer account
You can get a computer account to access the lab computers and the group server (wheatley) from either of the computer administrators. The current administrators are Isaac Storch and Arthur Barnard. Tell one of them your Cornell Net ID, which will be your user name, and they will make an account for you with a temporary password. The first time you log into a lab computer, it should ask you to change your password. Make sure that your new password has characters from at least 3 of these 4 groups: lower case letters, upper case letters, numbers, and symbols (these are windows' default password complexity requirements). DO NOT MAKE IT THE SAME AS YOUR NET ID PASSWORD! Let an administrator know if you have any trouble. For more information on getting a laptop connected to the lab network or how to access wheatley remotely, see the Group Computers page.
5. Get lab wiki account
Ask one of the computer administrators for a wiki account (your user name will be your net ID). They will give you a temporary password, but you will have to change that yourself after you log in (it will not ask you automatically). We can no longer let people create their own accounts because spam bots were hacking the wiki.
6. Enter contact information on the wiki
Click on the Contact Information link in the wiki. Copy the line of another person and enter your contact information.
7. Get expense account number
The only person who can get this number for you is Paul McEuen. Ask him in person what account number you should be using to start your CNF and Machine shop trainings. He wont know off the top of his head, but then you should email him about it, and he will give you a number directly from his computer. You can use this number to buy necessary items at the stockroom, as a CNF expense account, and as a billing number for the trainings that you will have to go through.
8. Get phone and copy codes
This isn't urgent, but it is not possible to make long distance phone calls off of lab phones without a phone code. Similarly, you need a copy code to use the copiers in the libraries and on the copiers upstairs. You can get both codes from Judy Wilson in 519 Clark.
9. Get Started at CNF
Graduate students:
You first need to sign up for safety training, a two-day, two-part event. The first part is the majority of the training and always occurs on a Monday; during the summer you will need to sign up well in advance in order to secure a spot. The second part can be scheduled later in the week. This training primarily covers chemical safety, but also includes a general tour of the CNF. There is a quiz at the end.
Once you have completed safety training you are an authorized CNF user and can enter the cleanroom on your own, but you will still need to be trained on individual tools before you can use any of them. Tool training is sometimes scheduled on this page or on the list of CNF area notices, but for most tools you will need to email the tool manager to schedule an appointment. It is best to follow another group member around when you first start working with tools, as they can offer guidance and provide our group's standard recipes, which will save you a lot of time and frustration.
Twice a year the CNF offers a ”nano course,” which is a three-day introduction to nanofabrication. Both sessions are identical, but one occurs in the summer and one over winter break. The course includes lectures by most of the CNF staff, as well as introductions to (NOT training on) the more commonly-used equipment and some cleanroom time. The course is a very good introduction to the facilities and explains much of what is possible and how the tools actually work.
10. Sign up for Machine Shop Class
Graduate students: To gain access to the machine shop you must complete a short course to learn machining basics. The class is offered “on demand”. The class is free and takes a few hours per week for 3 weeks. Go talk with Nate in the Student Machine Shop to find out more. You will need Paul's signature to sign up, but he always approves people to take the class.
11. EH&S safety classes
This required course is offered on Blackboard. It's mostly information about MSDS, chemical disposal, who to contact in case of emergency, etc. You have a choice of either completing it online or of signing up to attend the same powerpoint and video in person. There is a short quiz at the end.
Fire safety training is also required of all graduate students. Cheryl Lewkowicz is the contact for both courses.
If you plan to use the new Class IV laser in C1, you will need the University's laser safety training class. Cheryl Lewkowicz is also the contact person for that. Classes are taught approximately once a month at the East Hill office building. You must complete the class before using the laser.
12. Send 2 pictures of you to Isaac for webpage
We need pictures of people for the group webpage. Send two pictures of yourself for Isaac to put on your profile. One should be a mugshot, where you can clearly see your face, and the other should be a picture of you doing something fun (or anything else you want to show up when people mouse over your face). If possible, please send both pictures resized to 144 x 144 pixels. The best way to do this is to crop the pictures until they are square, then scale them down to 144 x 144. If you have trouble, Isaac can easily do this for you.
