McEuen Group MSDS Compilation

Most chemicals have two msds sheets available. One is available as a pdf download, and the other is a link. MSDS are not regulated, and each one may contain different information. As such, it is suggested that you view both of the provided MSDS for a chemical to get the best idea possible about potential risks and necessary safety precautions.

Lab Safety

Key Notes:

• Always add acid to water (as a memory aid, my chem teacher would say, “do as you oughta, add acid to wata” (Do as you ought to, add acid to water)).

• Don't drink solvents (lab ethanol is full of contaminants).

• Acetone and hydrogen peroxide are catalyzed by acids (e.g. acetic acid, etc) to form acetone peroxide which is 10 times more shock sensitive than nitroglycerin (look up some videos, it's pretty powerful too).

• Sodium hydroxide, besides burning your skin, causing lung damage and blinding you, reacts with magnesium, zinc, tin, chromium, brass, and aluminum to form hydrogen gas.

• Dichloromethane is metabolized into carbon monoxide (which is BAD) and can cause severe eye damage.

• DMF melts plastic and is carcinogenic.

• Resorcinol is incompatible with methanol, strong oxidizers and bases and is poisonous in strong doses of inhalation or skin/eye contact.

• Trichloroethylene is an anesthetic, toxic to liver and kidneys and probably carcinogenic.

• DSO is not very dangerous alone, but DISSOLVES NITRILE GLOVES and carries other chemicals with it.

• Other info: acids are bad, piranha is bad, hydrogen gas is bad, sealed containers of liquid nitrogen are bad (also, don't take it in the elevator with you). See the safety presentation for more specific information.
